Anytime I wear my hair in a high top knot bun, I always get asked how to do a messy bun. Well lucky for you, it is soooo simple it’s stupid and I have a step by step tutorial just for you. If I can do this anyone can. You can find some variation whether you have short or long hair.
Why Moms love the Top Knot Bun
How many mornings are you running around like a mad woman trying to get the children out the door? This happens more often than not for me. Unfortunately after I have gotten my kids off to school and done their hair (HERE are some great hair styles for kids when you are running late) I barely have enough time for me. And there is no chance I am waking up any earlier, sleep is precious. BUT at the same time I have to go in public and want to look presentable. The top knot bun is your answer. You look fabulous yet only took seconds to do. REMEMBER practice makes perfect!!
The top knot bun on kids looks so stinkin cute as well. I am usually a slicked back with gel type for my kids but occasionally love the natural messy look on my girls. I am sure their head appreciates it as well. hehe
I wear my hair in a messy top knot bun probably 4-5 times a week, especially during the hot summer months. It keeps my hair off of my neck which keeps me cooler. A couple of tips to remember when wearing a messy bun.
Tips for a Top Knot Hairstyle
- Because this hairstyle can look messy (but cute), remember to do your make up and wear a put together outfit. If not, you can easily look like you just woke up and we definitely don’t want that!
- I like doing a top knot bun on my 2nd or 3rd day after I’ve washed my hair. It works really well when there is some dirt in there! 😉
- Remember to pull hair loose and pull pieces out from around your face. You don’t want it to look too “done” if that makes sense. You want it to look effortless but chic aka messy bun.
I love how you can dress up a top knot bun with statement earrings, or keep it casual!
Best Products for a Messy Bun/Top Knot
The L’Oreal Lock It Hairspray is by far my favorite. It keeps everything in place and it smells divine! The dry shampoo I used is from Amika. I also started using their Shampoo & Conditioner and for all my blonde friends this is the best shampoo for you. I’ve loved all their products so far!
